Acid Reflux Treatments

Acid Reflux Treatment

Acid Reflux disease, otherwise known as GERD, is a disease that has several causes. Acid reflux treatment early on in this disease is a combination of lifestyle changes as well as certain medications. There are several types of acid reflux treatments medications. There are Antacids, Histamine Antagonists and Proton pump inhibitors (PPI).  Additionally there are drugs, which increase the movement of food through the intestinal tract and aid the stomach to heal the esophagus. Another form of acid reflux treatment are pills that when digested become foam barriers that are used in the esophagus in order to prevent the acids from moving up into the esophagus.  Without these various forms of acid reflux treatments, this can become a very chronic condition. Eventually it can lead to esophageal cancer, a very fast progressing disease. Therefore, it is imperative to get acid reflux treatment before it becomes a chronic condition.

Medications are the first level of acid reflux treatment and are aimed at eliminating the cause of the heartburn, the stomach acids themselves. There are several kinds of acid reflux medications and each has its place.

Diet is also used as an acid reflux treatment. Diets eliminate the various foods that cause acid reflux. With this method, a patient is asked to keep a food diary for a short period to pinpoint the various foods, which cause acid reflux. Milk is not recommended as an acid reflux treatment because, if taken before bed milk can actually cause heartburn later in the night as it is digested. Another dietetic acid reflux treatment is to eat small snacks instead of larger meals.

Chewing gum is an interesting acid reflux treatment. It seems that when chewing gum, the natural bicarbonate saliva is constantly produced and swallowed and thus becoming a natural acid reflux treatment.

There are several things that can be used as acid reflux treatments, especially before going to bed. These are simple acid reflux treatments. It has been shown that if you eat less several hours before you go to bed you will have less acid reflux at night. In addition, you can also raise the head of your bed or just your mattress to resolve these symptoms to eliminate symptoms.

It may be years, but eventually there is a chance that you might get to a point where any of these acid reflux treatments are not working. It is then that you and your doctor must decide on one of the last resorts in acid reflux treatments, surgery. One surgery consists of making an artificial hiatal hernia below the esophageal sphincter, and using that to prevent acid from seeping up into the esophagus.

Each of these acid reflux treatments have there pros and cons and should be taken appropriately. However, these acid reflux treatments all work in some way to reduce or eliminate the acids that cause heartburn. Antacids are good for the occasional attack of heartburn and the prescription drugs are more for the chronic acid reflux conditions. Should these drugs not work for the patient, then it is time for both doctor and patient to consider more aggressive acid reflux treatments.
