Cimitidine is a drug that is formulated to treat acid reflux by treating the ulcers in the stomach as well as in the small intestine so as to prevent the worsening of stomach walls and protect the stomach lining. This drug is dispensed in the form of tablets as well as solution both of which should be consumed orally but there are no restrictions on the food. It can be taken either with or without food.

However, the dosage of the medicine depends on the condition for which Cimitidine is being taken. It is best if the dosage recommendations are stipulated by your doctor, because his recommendations are individualized to a particular patient depending on their current health condition, age and medications that they are taking at that time.

However, make sure to indicate to your doctor if you are pregnant because this medicine is known to interfere with the development of the baby. Also inform him if you any health conditions like kidney or liver diseases or if you have had allergic reactions from Cimitidine in the past. Elderly people must use this medicine with caution because the side effects might occur more intensely in older patients.


This drug is also categorized as histamine 2 blocker that works by reducing the amount of acids in the stomach. It is also to treat intestinal ulcers and the discomfort in the stomach that causes heart burn. When the back flow of acid happens consistently then this condition is known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Ranitidine can also be used in treating this condition as well. Usage instructions of Ranitidine

This medicine comes in the form of oral tablets, oral solution and injection. If this medicine is taken only once a day it is best to be taken during bed time along with a glass of water. However the effervescent and granules formulation of this medicine must be dissolved in waster and taken. Make sure not to crush, break or chew the tablets. Do not let the effervescent tablet dissolve on the tongue. Measure the liquid version only with the measuring device provided to you when you purchase the medicine. Use other measuring spoons may cause you to overdose. But talk to your doctor before taking this medicine and inform him the following during consultation.

  • Any over-the-counter medication that you are currently consuming
  • If you have been allergic to Ranitidine and of its other ingredients in the past
  • If you are pregnant of planning to get pregnant in the near future
  • If you any health conditions associated with the heart, liver or kidney.

Constantly monitor your condition while taking the medicine. If you notice any unusual changes inform your doctor promptly. Do not smoke or drink alcohol along with this medicine. It increases the effects of alcohol leading to serious repercussions.


Omeprazole also reduces the acid in the stomach and treats acid reflux conditions that lead to damage in the lining of esophagus, stomach and duodenal. But this drug belongs to the class of proton pump inhibitors unlike the other two drugs. It is also employed in the treatment of GERD and other conditions that lead to excess acid in the stomach. But another different application of this medicine is in treating ulcers cause by an infection caused by the bacteria in the stomach. But to treat this specific condition it is used in conjunction with other medicines. However, this medicine cannot be used in the treatment of heartburn.

Usage instructions of Omeprazole

This medicine comes in delayed release capsules and delayed release granules. This medicine is known to release it medicine components in the intestine rather than in stomach to prevent the breakdown of this medicine by the acids in the stomach. The granular tablets are supposed to be mixed with liquid and taken by mouth. These tablets should be taken 1 hour prior to a meal. Depending on a person’s condition this medicine is either used once, twice or thrice a day. It is used twice a day if an individual is associated with H. pylori infection and thrice a day if too much acid is being produced in the stomach.

This medicine should be taken based only on the doctor’s instructions. Deviating from the dose can lead to unknown side effects. If you happen to miss a dose take the forgotten dose as soon you remember. But avoid taking it if it almost time for your next dose. Never take a medicine twice to make up for the missed dose. Before taking this medicine inform about your current health condition and any medications that you taking for treating those health conditions. This will prevent any drug interactions which sometime could be life-threatening.
